Circolito is a local youth-circus (circus school) in the city of Mechelen, founded in 2000. No, we don’t train elephants or live in caravans ;-). You can compare us to a youth or sport club, where people can come in their free-time and discover several circus techniques. For most of them, it’s just free-time, some of them are preparing for a professional circus career. Circolito teaches on an educational and creative base different circus techniques (walking on a wire, juggling, acrobatics, trapeze, tissue, unicycle, stilts, …), combined with games, theatre, and movement to everybody who wants to try these techniques. Most of our participants are children between the age of 4 and 18, there’s a small but increasing number of adults over 18. We have about 470 members in the 27 weekly courses, 180 participants in our 7 circus weeks during school holidays, and 110 participants in the annual circus camp. In about 150 circus workshops and performances in the wide region of Mechelen, around 5000 kids are reached each year. Expression, motivation, experience success (and coping with failure), teamwork, communication, perseverance, self-learning, … are all included in our way of working.
The travelbudget will be communicated with the volunteer. He will buy his own tickets, we will pay the grant after arrival. We will organise a pick-up at the airport.
The volunteer will be benefit from the European AXA insurance for volunteers.
As a circus-organisation, safety is a very important topic in everything what we do. We have strict safety precautions, and thanks to that, a very low accident rate. Our participants are trained to prevent or reduce risks when performing or training. During the circus classes the volunteer will always work under the supervision and the responsibility of one of our qualified circus teachers
MENTORING AND SUPPORT:
We will listen to the volunteer, what he/she wants to do in the organization and give him/her ownership of certain projects. We will provide a healthy balance work-free time. We will provide a mentor who he/she can talk to.
FOOD AND ACCOMODATION:
The volunteer will be hosted in a well screened host family, in (the vicinity of) Mechelen and with ties to Circolito. All normal cost for accomodation and food will be paid by the host organisation in agreement with the host family. We will search for a family where the volunteer can feel at home. We will have a regular contact with the host family to see how the volunteer is doing and everything is going well at her new home.
The volunteer can profit 2 days off a week, every month he can take off 2 more days. A lot of our members go to circus events in summer (festivals, conventions, …), the volunteer will be free to join them.
The volunteer will get bicycle (or unicycle;))
We will provide Dutch languages classes in cooperation with ‘het huis van Nederlands’, about 12 hours a week for a period of 6 months. As descriped in the week schedule, when the language courses are finished, she will have more time for the own project.
The volunteer will work on several areas:
1. YOUTH-WORK: ASSISTANT IN CIRCUS CLASS:
This will be interesting for the EVS-volunteer, because attending circus classes will be a great learning-opportunity. The volunteer can learn teaching-skills by observation and participation. The lessons are in Dutch, so it is also a great opportunity to learn Dutch and to meet other youngsters from our organisation.
2. OFFICE – ORGANISATION:
The volunteer will be involved in the organisation of our projects. With the volunteer we can decide what kind of preparations can be done (logistics, preparations of the games, ..) The volunteer can learn about organising projects in Youth-work.
3. OWN PROJECT WORK
There will be a often meeting with Mieke, the EVS-representative. They will evaluate the week and discuss the occasional projects in which the volunteer can assist in the next week(s). (example: circus-teambuildings, circus-in-school-projects, circus weeks in school holidays, rehearsals of our performance groups, performances, camp preparations, own project, …)
We’ll look for a special project for the volunteer, depending on his/her learning interests:
– costume design
– photo or video reports
– webmaster (we’re working on a completely new site),
– social circus projects for kids with fewer opportunities
– creating decors for the production groups
– developping promotional materials (flyer, posters, …)
For the selection of the volunteers we will need:
– Europass CV with picture (made in the last month)
– Motivational letter, writing that your sending organisation will be “Building Bridges”
Remember to write in the motivation letter that your sending institution is “Asociación Building Bridges”.
All documents written in english you can send to: firstname.lastname@example.org with subject “EVS Belgica Circolito” .
