From our office, by the square of Marche-en-Famenne, a 17 000 inhabitants town of the Belgian province of Luxembourg, we organize projects all over the French Community of Belgium (Brussels and Wallonia) and maintain close partnerships with non-profit organizations from all over the world.
This unique situation will permit the volunteer to share the semi-rural life style of the area, but also to meet young people from different places of the country as well as to be in contact with people from the other side of the world.
During his/her EVS, the volunteer will live and mostly work in Marche-en-Famenne.
The town offers all modern facilities (shops, supermarkets, sport center, cinema).
For the urban-life-style-lovers, it is however IMPORTANT to know that our town is located in a semi-rural area. Even if it is not far away from the biggest Belgian cities (57 km from Liège, 106 km from Brussels, 47 km from Namur) and well connected by train, Marche-en-Famenne can sometimes look remote and very quiet.
Period of volunteering:
For the next 4th October deadline 2017, we will apply for a collective project which will allow 7 youngsters to come in Belgium to volunteer during one year in the town of Marche-en-Famenne or in Liège city.
Period of volunteering: February/March 2018, until February/March 2019; for 12 months.
THE DEADLINE TO APPLY IS 10TH AUGUST 2017
(We won’t be able to take in consideration applications which will arrive after the deadline)
We encourage the volunteer to learn a bit of French before the beginning of the project.
!!!WE CAN’T ACCEPT APPLICATIONS NOT SPECIFYING FOR WHICH PROJECT THE VOLUNTEER IS APPLYING FOR!!!!
DESCRIPTION OF ORGANISATION:
The Association is a non-profit, non-political youth organisation recognised by the French Community of Belgium. The organisation proposes different kinds of activities, mainly based on volunteering and non-formal education: local and international workcamps, medium and long term voluntary services, leisure time activities for and with disabled people…
All these activities would not be possible without a network of 420 belgian volunteers, almost 200 international volunteers during the summer and a team of 8 employees.
We are a Youth Organisation and most of our public is aged between 16 and 25 years, even if there is not upper age limit to integrate our groups of volunteers.
CBB especially promotes an inclusive approach of the public; we strongly believe in the richness of the diversity and take action to favour the heterogeneous character of our groups of volunteers. Therefore, the members of the association (+- 420 people) are from diverse origins and capacities.
CBB is member of the ALLIANCE of European Volunteer Service Organisations.
MOTIVATION AND EVS EXPERIENCE
CBB, is a non-profit organisation created in 1977, which promotes solidarity, active citizenship and comon understanding between people and cultures through several activities based on non-formal education and volunteering.
We participate in the EVS Programme both as sending and Hosting Organisation since 1997. We are accreditated as coordinating organisation since 2007. We believe that this programme perfectly fits with our organisational goals and methods : non-formal education, citizen awarness, volunteering, intercurality are keywords in our daily action.
We also particulary appreciate the learning opportunities that the EVS offers to all young people, regardless to their origins, background and economical means.
CBB, presents the specificity to develop of lot of international exchanges and to be located in a small town of the south -french speaking- part of Belgium. From our office, by the church place of Marche-en-Famenne, a 17 000 inhabitants town of the province of Luxembourg, we organise projects all over the French Community of Belgium (Brussels and Wallonia) and maintain close partnerships with non-profit organisations from all over the world. This unique situation will permit the volunteer to share the semi-rural life style of the area, but also to meet young people from different places of the country as well as to be in contact with people from the other side of the earth.
During his/her EVS activity, the volunteer will integrate our team of staff members which is currently composed of 8 employees, 4 males and 4 females with an average age of 30 years old. Of course, this composition may change during the next months/years. Usualy, a second EVS volunteer also works with us, and is especialy involved in our activities dedicated to a better social inclusion of the disabled people.
As we organise activities and projects in different places of the French Community of Belgium, our public is spread in all this area. Additionaly, during the summer, we host, for short term periods (2-3 weeks), almost 200 people from +- 20 countries (mainly european) to participate in our projects. Consequently, the EVS volunteer will frequently be in touch with our local volunteers and times to times with the international volunteers. Within our members, the average age is 22 year old. Most of them are students, but we count also with us carpenters, ingeneers, unemployed people, IT specialists, housewifes, butchers, artists… Another specificity of our organisation is that, thanks to our commitment for a better inclusion of the disabled people, several active members of the organisation (75/420) are in situation of mental disability. It offers a wonderfull opportunity to meet extraordinary people. It is also an important element of our associative project, which is to promote the richness of diversity and to work for a better interinvidual solidarity.
During his/her EVS, the volunteer will live and mostly work in Marche-en-Famenne. The town offers all modern facilities (shops, supermarkets, sport center, cinema….). For the urban-life-style-lover, it is however IMPORTANT to understand that our town is located in a semi rural area. Even if it is not far away from the biggest belgian cities (57 km from Liège, 106 km from Brussels, 47 km from Namur) and well connected by train, Marche-en-Famenne can sometimes look remote and very quiet. A Tuesday, at 11 pm in November, it can be totally dead ; on friday night, the volunteer will often meet the same guys at the corner bar ; and, in the surroundings, deers and foxes are more usual than buses and traffic jams. As the population is not very big, everybody seems to know everybody. This can of course help a lot to the socialization of the newcomer, but it is a social configuration that the gossipers shoud appreciate more than the privacy defenders…
In Marche, the volunteer will share his/her place with other EVS volunteers. Interculturality at home will ryhm with independence, and autonomy. Occasionaly, the volunteer will be involved in co-leading projects and will share a residential group life (from the duration of a week-end up to two or three weeks). Than, the accomodation can be in dormitories and the conditions of life more basical.
PROJECT 1 – MIcados
Our EVS volunteer will have as main mission to be involved in the project “SacAdos”.
The aim of this project is to allow youngsters between 15 and 20 years old in school dropout situation, to have a reflection period about their future by taking part in manual works, creative activities and social actions which are useful to all our community (environment activities, building and painting activities, open space maintenance activities, activities for elder people, children or refugees, building music instruments for developing countries…).
By taking part in these activities, these youngsters have the opportunity to reflect about their future (go back to school, starting a professional training…).
SacAdos activities will take place next to our local partners which are based not only in Marche-en- Famenne but also in villages around (a local rest home for elderly people, the asylum seekers center of Melreux, the environmental education center Natagora, Music Found, Accueil Famenne…).
Our aim is that these youngsters will develop personal and social know-how as punctuality, ability to take responsibilities, solidarity, social commitment, better self-esteem and ability to leave in group.
Under the frame of the SacAdos project:
-From February until June – the EVS volunteer will take part in the activities for the youngsters participating in SacAdos program;
-From July until December- the EVS volunteer will take part in the evaluation of the project to understand what to change for the next edition (finding new partners, preparation of workshops, accompanying the youngsters having participated in the project in their future personal initiatives…);
-From January until February – the EVS volunteer will contribute to implement the activities of SacAdos project for the next edition and next EVS volunteer.
The volunteer will always work with the educator of MICADOS who is in charge of the SacAdos project (he will also be always followed-up by another educator of MICADOS as his/her tutor).
Thanks to this, the volunteer will have the opportunity to develop skills of accompanying youngsters, listening to them, supporting them, orienting them…
The volunteer will also develop practical skills (gardening, building, painting…).
According to his/her skills and interests the volunteer will have the possibility to propose other activities and to implement a personal project.
The volunteer will also be involved in other activities proposed in MICADOS which mainly concern children and youngsters animation (for example children animation during the summer camps we organize). S/he will also take part in our weekly team meetings and will help us in some administrative task at the office.
Moreover, the EVS activity within MICADOS is part of an EVS group project that aims to increase European awareness among youth in the town of Marche-en-Famenne and to maintain a close collaboration among the local youth services. For that reason, some activities will be run with other EVS volunteers (hosted in Marche-en-Famenne by other local youth organizations).
The volunteers will work together especially during special events organized once a year in the town: intergenerational events, youth services opening day…. The volunteers will help to prepare and follow-up these events. In some occasions, they could hold an information stand presenting EVS program and youth exchange opportunities. They could also organize a “European night” in the local youth house to present therefore their country and traditions.
Profile of the volunteer
Our project is open to anybody motivated by volunteering and who wishes to be involved in our organisation and work with children and youngsters regardless to their nationality, religion, believes, diploma, professional experience.
We would prefer that our EVS volunteer is at least 22 years old, as s/he will mainly work (mainly but not only ) under the frame of our SACados project and the youngsters who benefit from this program are in between 15 and 20 years old.
Because the majority of the youngsters attending MICADOS activities don’t speak any other language than French, the volunteer must have good skills in French before starting the service.
Because of the profile of the youngsters we work with, our volunteer must be an open minded person and ready to work with people coming from different social backgrounds.
We expect the volunteer to build an atmosphere of confidence with the youngsters; be ready to involve him/herself in the several tasks we do with them (practical and artistic skills are welcome!); be able to work together with the staff; be interested in social inclusion and youngsters’ support and be ready to bring new ideas, new energy and enthusiasm!
PROJECT 2 – CFP Famenne-Ardenne
We mainly expect from our EVS volunteer to accompany, support and help our technical trainers in organizing and leading all the trainings (professional cleaning, laundry, car wash, gardening, agriculture…) we offer to our public. At the beginning the volunteer will take the time to discover all what we do in CFP and then s/he will choose the activities s/he will be more interested in!
The volunteer will have many practical learning opportunities.
Her/his work in CFP will be mostly practical/manual.
For example, by taking part in our trainings of ‘gardening and agriculture’ the volunteer will learn about the techniques of preparation of soils, seeding and plantations; taking part in the training ‘blanchisserie’ s/he will learn how to run professional laundry and ironing activities and so on…
No matter which activities the volunteer will chose to do, s/he will for sure acquire skills in working with disabled and disadvantaged people.
The volunteer will be completely integrated in our team; s/he will mainly support us in the organization of the trainings but also in the implementation and promotion of leisure activities such as journeys, games, outdoor activities and cultural events for the users of our center.
If desired the volunteer will take part in our educational meeting; s/he will help us in the evaluation of our trainees’ development.
The aim of his/her presence in our center is to offer our people the possibility to open themselves to another culture, another dimension.
The volunteer is expected to help us in improving the group cohesion, bringing new ideas and working actively for a stronger inclusion of our people. To reach this goal s/he will be warmly encouraged to collaborate with the other young people who volunteer in CBB projects, focused on the topic of disabled people inclusion.
During the project the volunteer will receive all the support needed: s/he will have a mentor who will help him/her in opening a bank account, finding a French course, enrolling him/herself to the city hall and s/he will have of course also technical support during the work.
Collective activities with other EVS volunteers
The EVS activity within CFP Famenne-Ardenne is part of an EVS group project that aims to increase European awareness among youth in the town of Marche-en-Famenne and to improve a closer collaboration between the local social services. For this reason, some activities will be run with other EVS volunteers (hosted by three other local organizations).
The volunteers are encouraged to work together especially during specific youth events organized once a year in Marche-en-Famenne: Rock festival, Carnival, youth services opening day… The volunteers will help to prepare and follow-up these events. In some occasions, they can hold an information stand presenting EVS program and youth exchange opportunities. We would also like to organize a “European night” in the local youth house to give volunteers the possibility to present their country and traditions.
Profile of the volunteer
Our project is open to anybody motivated by volunteering and who wishes to be involved in our organisation, regardless to his/her nationality, religion, believes, diploma, professional experience. Because our public doesn’t speak any other language than French, we require that the volunteer have some basic skills in communicating in French.
We expect the volunteer to be open to the difference and ready to build an atmosphere of confidence and security with the centre users; be ready to involve him/herself in the several tasks we do with them; be able to work together with the staff; be interested in the topic of disabled people inclusion; agree with our philosophy of equality and openness to the difference; willing to listen, communicate and care about the young adults in risk of exclusion.
!!!We ask the volunteer to provide a certificate of good conduct (CGC)!!!
PROJECT 3 – Terrain d’Aventure du Péri
In our project, the volunteer will be all the time in contact with children and young people. S/he will launch, lead and follow several activities. These ones can be various and will depend of his/her ideas, wishes and skills. They will always suppose a democratic participation of the children who have the right to choose and make proposals.
Usual activities in the Adventure Playground are: Artistic workshops (painting, sculptures, serigraphy…);
Creative/participative workshops (cooking, sewing, handicraft, shed buildings, storytelling, wild plants preparations…); Games (outdoor games, sport games, table games…); Outdoor activities (nature discovering, gardening…).
The volunteer will also help us in the maintenance of the Playground (small reparations, painting, grass cutting). S/he will also help us when we’ll participate in special events and/or organise punctual projects with other partner organisations: carnival, city fest, shed symposium, international work camp.
During winter time the Playground is open 4 days per week:
Wednesday: 12h à 18h;
Thursday: 15h30 à 21h (since 18h and only for children 12+);
Friday: 15h30 à 21h (since 18h and only for children 12+); on the 3rd Friday of each month we organize a “welcome parents night” until 22h;
Saturday : 10h à 17h.
During the school holidays it is open 5 days per week, from Monday to Friday, from 10 am to 17 pm.
The volunteer will have a very flexible schedule: our working times depend on children free time from school: during the winter there are more “dead periods” instead of in the summer when the activities increase and we have A LOT, A LOT to do!!!
Profile of the volunteer
Our project is open to anybody motivated by volunteering and who wishes to be involved in our organisation and work with children and youngsters, regardless to their nationality, religion, believes, diploma, professional experience.
We expect the volunteer to want to build an atmosphere of confidence and security with the children; be ready to involve him/herself in the several activities we do; be able to work together with the staff; be interested in the topic of young people entertainment; agree with our philosophy; to be enthusiast and bring new ideas. As told above it’s also important to be very flexible, wishful to implement workshops and activities for children and youngsters and to able to take initiatives!
