project description
The Verein runs a school («Sonnenhaus») for children aged 6-14 years, based on principles of progressive education, esp. Montessori and nonviolent communication. With our school, we aim at supporting and guiding children on their way to responsible-minded, confident and open-minded persons. Furthermore we try to deepen contacts and intensify common activities with other educational institutions and establish a centre for progessive education in the region and across the close border to Slovenia.
Currently, there are 26 children attending our school, which started in 2010. Since autumn 2014, our new school building in the city of Leibnitz is finished. Our school ist rather new so that experiences are limited yet. Nevertheless, our school is already a certified «ÖKOLOG»-school (a network of schools with a focus on environmental issues, http://www.oekolog.at/) and active member of various networks for progressive education.
accommodation, food and transport arrangements
The school ist close to both the centre of Leibnitz and the train station. A bus stop for public transport nearby the school is established.
A proper accomodation in Leibnitz, which enables the volunteer to reach the school by means of public transport or – according to the wishes of the volunteer – in a reasonable time will be arranged.
According the wishes of the volunteer, food will be partly available at school. For all other meals both during the weeks as well as for weekends and holidays, a supplement rate is being paid according to the Erasmus+ guidelines.
training during the project
Pre Departure Training; On Arrival Training; Mid Term Training in case the activity periode lasts more than 6 months.
Moreover, to safeguard a good european volunteering project, the school itself foresees feedback talks by the task related mentor and with the private mentor as well as supervision if wished.
volunteer profile
We would appreciate open-minded volunteers feeling confident with spending time and working with children starting at the age of 6.
The management board would decide about a recruitment after hearing the teaching staff.
PROJECT 2

The Vulkans is a a private non profit school with «Öffentlichkeitsrecht», which means a primary and secondary school for pupils aged 6–14. It is a small school, with all together 45 pupils, situated in the countryside in South-Eastern Austria. The Vulkan is a private school with „Öffentlichkeitsrecht“, which means that we are legally like any other public school, with the only exception that the association financially sustaining the school is private: a registered society, „Verein“. We are a parents` initiative, and, not only financially dependent on the involvment and honorary participation of the parents. The Vulkan is the only school following a reformist education in the region of Feldbach. We teach according to Maria Montessori (in primary school) and Peter Petersen`s Jenaplan in secundary school. It is in secondary school that a volunteer is needed in the first place.Central ideas of our pedagogy are a holistic, project-oriented, interdisciplinary and mixed-age education, learner-centered, action-oriented and eager to keep up the joy of learning.
It is due to the learner-centered way of teaching, that we are looking for an encouraged and pedagogically interested person to support us – respectively our pupils. We are looking for a volunteer who loves working with children (teenagers), and who is interested in helping and supporting them with their questions and assignments. Who is eager to support pupils and teachers in easy assignments like gardening, cooking, arts, handcraft and others. Who will like to tell and teach us about her or his own cultural background, and maybe even his or her language.Another reason why we wish to have an European volunteer among us: Our school is very openminded, our teachers come from or used to live and work in other European countries, BUT due to the fact that we as a school are situated in the middle of the countryside, „Europe“ is not part of our pupils` everyday life. They don`t really have opportunities to get in touch with people from foreign countries and cultures. That`s what we would like to change with the help integration of an evs volunteer supporting us in our school activities. We would like our pupils to really get in touch with Europe! We would like to open their eyes to the fact that nowadays we don`t live in isolated countries any more– and that our real borders are those in our minds. We believe that a European volunteer will be an enrichment for our school – and we wish to be the same for our future volunteer.
Please be aware that the school is situated in the countryside, in a green and peaceful environment. In the small village of Auersbach, about 5 kilometers from the city of Feldbach with its 14.000 inhabitants.
Selection process
The selection procedure will be done by the teams of each host organisation. This should be done until 17 th of April 2018 at the latest.
+ Please note that only short listed candidates will be informed about the results of the selection procedure.
We will study carefully all application and selected candidates will be invite for Skype interview. The selection of volunteers will take place in the coming weeks.
For the selection of the volunteers we will need:
– Europass CV with picture (made in the last month) with skype name included
– Motivational letter, writing that your sending organisation will be “Building Bridges”. We ask all candidates to send a specific letter of motivation – why they want to volunteer with us rather than just a general EVS one.
