Free placements starting from February / March 2018*!
*if the projects are granted by the Erasmus+ program
Duration: 10 – 12 months

Entidad acogida voluntariado
Since more than 55 years the“Verein “ (association for the aid of the disabled) and the BHH are acting for people in the Hamburg region who are suffering from a physical or mental handicap or who have mental problems.
Currently (in 2017) approximately 850 clients are using our diverse accommodation, therapy and ambulant services. Meeting-points, after-school-clubs for disabled children as well as free-time and training opportunities complete our proposals.
Approximately 650 members of staff are employed by the BHH. They work in multi-professional teams which are composed by social-workers, educators, nurses and therapists.
gGmbH: Our objectives
The principal object is to support the disabled adults in a comprehensive and individual way to enable them to live as independently as possible and to participate in social and cultural life.
„Integration“, „Normalisation“ and „Self-Advocacy“ are the primary aims of our work. We believe that integration is a question of our attitudes toward disabled persons as well as the circumstances and chances given to disabled people by society.
The individual is the focus of our work which we divide in the following fields:
physical well-being
coping with day to day life
mobility and orientation
leisure time activities
social contacts
occupational choices

The work and tasks of the volunteers
The volunteers give individual and leisure-time orientated support to disabled adults.
Important aspects of the volunteer’s work are:
gaining an understanding of what it means to be disabled and dependent
- recognising where individual non-professional assistance is needed
establishing a basis of communication and understanding
learning to give the needed support to the group and the individual
An important aim of our work is to integrate disabled people into society.
Our volunteers assist and support the disabled people in all daily activities. A special focus is the participation in social and cultural activities e.g.:
day trips (sight-seeing, shopping, museum etc.)
holidays (we organise special holidays for a week with approx. 6 disabled adults and the same number of staff members)
visits to football matches, concerts, cinemas, discos, restaurants etc.
The volunteers participate in these activities and offer additional individual help. At the same time the EVS-participants get a lot of impressions not only about working with disabled people but they also learn something about the country, its people, language and culture.
Each volunteer can create his / her own project:
Developing and carrying out volunteer projects:
The volunteers are welcome to create their own projects with the disabled people according to their ideas and interests, e.g. workshops to special themes, video and photo projects, evenings that stand in the light of a special theme, internet group, presentation of their home country. It is also possible to develop projects together with other volunteers of the BHH.
We support especially the development of intercultural projects which are destinated to show some aspects of the origin culture of the volunteer for ex. by playing games, cooking, music, fotos etc.
Apoyo y formación
All the evs projects are coordinated by the evs coordinator of the BHH. She is organising monthly meetings and social activities with the volunteers and also supervising the coaches for the volunteers in the different evs projects. Each volunteer has a personal coach who gives help, support and advice.
Each volunteer attends the obligatory On-Arrival-Training and the Mid-Term-Meeting for evs volunteers. The volunteer attends an intensive language course (approx. 4 weeks, 5 hours a day) at a local language school in Hamburg at the beginning of her/his stay. We also offer a follow up course (2 hours a week) at the adult education centre. The volunteers can take part in different seminars (with other staff) about disabilities (e.g. about handling wheelchairs; our attitudes towards disabled people; introduction to special disabilities).
Horas trabajo , alojamiento y manutención
The volunteers work 35 hours on 5 days per week. The regular working hours depend on the project where the volunteer is working. There is an entitlement for 2,5 holidays per month. If there are social activities with the disabled in the evenings or at the weekends (this can be regularly the case!) the volunteer will be compensated with extra days-off for his/her participation in these activities.
The volunteers’ accommodation is in our staff home of the Senator-Neumann-Heim (for the projects Senator-Neumann-Heim, Haus Trillup and Hilda-Heinemann-Haus). The staff home provides accommodation for the EVS-participants and other young staff members. The volunteers have their own single room. Showers, W.C. and a kitchen are on every floor. In the base ment there are facilities to wash, dry and iron clothes. The 3 volunteers who participate in the project “Come together” share an apartment on their own in Hamburg-Harburg, the volunteers from “Haus Beerboom” also share a 3-room-apartment. We do not provide a hotel service. That means that the volunteers have to care for a certain standard of hygiene and cleanliness.
The volunteers get a monthly meal allowance so that they can afford their food.
Actividades sociales y tiempo libre
The hosting projects are situated at the outskirts of Hamburg. But in more or less 30 minutes you are in the city centre. The volunteers get a monthly ticket for local public transport. They can spend their free time as they choose. Hamburg offers very exciting and interesting cultural and social activities. If the volunteer has any special interests or hobbies we try to find with her/him a suitable group (e.g. choir, dancing, language-seminars).
Our organisation offers monthly social and cultural activities with the group of volunteers. We take into account the special wishes and interests of the volunteers when planning these activities (e.g. going to special places of interest in Hamburg or the surroundings).
Idioma del voluntariado
Ok – German is a difficult language! But the work of the volunteer is based on the direct communication with disabled people. So it is advisable that the volunteers have a basic knowledge of German or at least good English skills. Everybody should be willing to learn German also out side the language course.
