About the organization
Vilnius Balsiai School was established in 2011. The school building is new, modern, comfortable, equipped with modern technologies and tools. The school community consists of about 950 students (6-14 years old), their parents, teachers and the staff. The school is divided into Lower School (ages 6-7), Primary School (ages 7-11), and Basic School (ages 11-14).
The school is situated in the suburb of Vilnius (about 20 kilometres away from the city center) known for its lakes and parks. It is easily reachable by public transport. The ride takes about 40 minutes from the city center. School has a comfortable and modern library, sports and dance halls, an outside garden and a sports field. These facilities are available for pupils and the school community for non-formal learning.
As the school is really new, the strategy, traditions and methods are still under development. The main values of the community are creativity, respect, responsibility.
Volunteer will have an opportunity to work with a combination of three major age groups.
Routine school activities include formal education and a wide range of extra-curricular activities (non-formal education) involving sports, arts, dancing, theatre, nature, etc. The school is also equipped for students with learning difficulties and special needs, with a great team of specialists providing special support: social pedagogue, special pedagogue, psychologist, speech therapist etc.
The main tasks for the volunteer:
Volunteer will have a pro – active role, assisting the other members of the school team: teachers, social pedagogue, speech therapist and special pedagogue in the individual work with children that have learning difficulties. As well the volunteer would organize the post school activities of non-formal learning. There are a lot of organized activities for pupils after classes; so the volunteer would join the educators to create the activities for children.
The school wants to involve international volunteers in the community for openness to the other and also to encourage volunteer activities among the students in the school itself and out of it. To foster the values of tolerance, responsibility, diversion and the volunteerism itself.
The help of volunteers is expected the following fields:
To help create dynamics of occupation of free time activities during the breaks or free lessons, trough the realization of games and group work, thematic conversations;
Looking after children after classes at the time when they have to wait for transportation home;
To be a helper of the special pedagogist in the individual help of the students that have learning difficulties;
To be a helper of the social pedagogist in the individual or group work of pupils that have behaviour problems;
To encourage pupils in language learning: to be a live example of the diverse of the languages and to teach informally some native language of the volunteer, as well as to join in to the teaching of foreign languages of the school (English, German, Russian or French). We expect the volunteer to organize an after school club, where pupils that have difficulties in learning language at classes would be encouraged to use a foreign spoken language in the level they are able (by playing card games, watching movies and singing songs)
The profile of volunteers
There are no specific requirements for the volunteers: generally they must be self-motivated, willing to take on new challenges, and open to working with people of all backgrounds and cultures, dynamic, versatile, good mood, flexible, with self-initiative, experienced in children work, willing to take on new challenges, with ability to manage and solve conflicts in a creative way; enthusiastic to participate in the project; mature to work and to relate to a group of children/youngsters and willing to develop new activities with sense of responsibility.
How to apply
Building Bridges members and/or long term unemployed (proved by scanned document) will have preference to this volunteer service.
We will study carefully all application and selected candidates will be invite for Skype interview. The selection of volunteers will take place in the coming weeks.
For the selection of the volunteers we will need:
– Europass CV with picture (made in the last month) with skype name included
– Motivational letter, writing that your sending organisation will be “Building Bridges”. We ask all candidates to send a specific letter of motivation – why they want to volunteer with us rather than just a general EVS one. The volunteer is chosen according to his/her motivation and interest to the project and to the activities. It will be paid special attention to cover letters.
Remember to write in the motivation letter that your sending institution is “Asociación Building Bridges”.
