The mobility period shall start on 01.10.2016 and end on 31.08.2017.
Description of the activity:
The children and young people of Roma descent in Bulgaria live in isolated ghettos. Within these areas there are segregated schools where the children do not develop their capacity, don’t speak Bulgarian and are therefore illiterate and drop out of the education system.
The children are not engaged in extracurricular activities which can help them develop their motor and creative skills. Within these areas there is a lack of community centers and interest clubs that encourage children and young people to develop skills such as team work, creative and technical thinking, there are no sports facilities and playgrounds, there is a lack of any activities to help the young generation establish a sense of self-worth, self-esteem and confidence. Due to economic difficulties, most of the Roma population spend their entire lives in the ghettos. On the other hand, the tendency of early marriage is increasing, because young people are not engaged in the education and employment process.
The policies lead in Bulgaria is not favorable for establishing employment opportunities for ethnic minorities which leads to criminal behavior. Poverty in children continues to rise in households with three or more children, which leads to dropping out of school and an increase of child labor in the Roma areas. The living conditions of children and young people of Roma and Turkish descent in small settlements are even less favorable.
Children establish families even at a younger age namely due to illiteracy.
The project “Creativity on Wheels” aims to influence the process of dropping out of the education system of children and young people of Roma and Turkish descent within the city of Varna and the village of Benkovsky. We will establish sustainable mechanisms for integration by providing conditions to engage the children in extracurricular activities that will develop and motivate them within the education process. The children will be supported with language courses, classes in Bulgarian and math, using a method which is entirely new for the Roma areas – informal education.
By implementing the project, we will provide the children with creative and technical skills, soft skills (team work and communication skills), they will be taught innovative thinking and mainly, will build self-esteem.
Informal education has not been used when working with Roma children before even though it has been proved to be the best approach to educate children with special needs, such as bilingual children. We plan to establish arts and crafts workshops in the village of Benkovsky in order to help the development of the children there, within the 12-month period of the project, along with the EVS volunteers, we will assist the struggle against the process of dropping out of the education system and help to bring purpose and motivation to the children’s lives.
The volunteers will assist the children with their lessons, teach them English, help them with their extracurricular activities. Furthermore, the volunteers will help
establish arts and crafts workshops where the children can build up and develop new skills, creative and technical thinking. We will help them discover and realize themselves as worthy citizens of the EU and most importantly, help them build self-esteem.
